Our speaker was Carol Bopp from Hope House in Youngstown. The Hope House was built in 2000 by the Junior League and was the first in the nation that is freestanding and modern, dedicated to the children and families of divorce and domestic violence or substance abuse. They serve 75 adults and 85 children a week, and use ranges from 3 months to forever, but the average is 9 months. Parenting and child counseling classes are provided, but the main use is for supervised visitation and drop off/pickup spots for divorced families. Our own Melissa Crowley is a long term board member there, and our club and Interact provide 100 treat bags yearly for Halloween, over the past four years.
Mike called meeting to order. Hillary Prestridge led us in prayer.
Guests were Mary Lou Green from Boardman, Tom Keller and Stephanie Childers from Canfield, and our favorite Ambassadorial Scholar Sarah Hahn, home before heading to Tufts University to work on her masters.
Robin was song leader, dedicated For He's A Jolly Good Fellow to Pres. Cafaro.
Perfect attendance awards were given, see picture on press release.
We will be parking cars tomorrow for a Twp. park concert. Be there at 6 and it counts as a makeup.
Mike reminded members that Aug. 15 is the deadline to apply for Ambassadorial Scholars positions for 2009-2010. More details can be found on the Rotary website.
Ohio Rotary will sponsor a Rotary Night at Columbus Crew stadium for a soccer match, Aug. 23. The cost is $30.
We will be ringing the bell for the Salvation Army on Nov. 29.
We will be having a Rotary Social Gathering this Thursday at Quaker Steak and Lube, Rt. 46 and 80, from 7-9 p.m. Bring friends, and it counts as a makeup.
Mike gave his weekly "Shower Thought", saying that is where he does his best thinking. His topic was Why Are We Rotarians?" and the answer is the WE CARE about our community, state, and nation, as well as the world. After discussion last week, the board decided to pay for the spraying of trees in the Celebration Grove twice a year. In addition they also decided to do some weeding and trimming as part of our twice yearly Roadside Cleanup, with a picnic between events at Pogany Pavilion. It should be fun and beneficial.
Fellowship: Dave Buttar fined himself for being unprepared last week, and then anyone who didn't sign up for a future project. He commented that Brian Frederick was on the front page of Vindy Sports yesterday (July 20) preparing for the Triathlon competition, good job Brian.
