At the Jan. 18 meeting of the Rotary Club of Austintown, Jodi Harmon, development director at the Easter Seals Center, was the main speaker. She reminded Rotary members that the Youngstown Easter Seal Center was founded by Youngstown Rotary in 1951, and has expanded its services greatly over the 50+ years. They serve the Trumbull, Mahoning, and Columbiana county area, and provide service to 3000 children a year, but also to adults through day care and rehab services, weekend and daily respite services too. Easter Seals is having a fund raising walk on April 24, "Walk With Me", with 99 cents of every dollar staying in the local area. The meeting was called to order by President Brian Laraway. Gary Reel led invocation, pledge, and God Bless America.
SONGLEADER: Ron Carroll was song leader, another rendition of "Smile" but sounded good.Brian announced Division 1 Clubs were joining together to provide a shelter box for Haiti, cost is $1000. but handles 10-12 people. Our club share is $167. We voted to do it.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:* This Saturday, Jan. 23, District Assembly in Salem, meet at Smith Corners Church at 8 a.m. to carpool to Salem, meeting from 9-1, but Brian will be leaving at 12 if that helps.* Rescue Mission next Monday, Gary, Tony and Ron volunteered to go plus Interact kids.. We have no meeting that day because of Div. 1 meeting at Holiday Inn Boardman on WEDNESDAY, Jan. 27 at noon to hear Jean Irwin, reading specialist on literacy, Brian has heard her and very impressed, so let's travel well and have a good showing. * Tickets for our Reverse Raffle were distributed, nice number went out to those present. Mike Cafaro and committee will be Event Planning, Dave Buttar and Deanna handling tickets, and all members working on Chinese Auction, as Melissa has a new baby.
* Speaking of Melissa, she and Harvey came today, and she glowed in talk about Emma Nicole, who is sleeping well and doesn't cry.........yet. Born Jan. 8
Chuck Baker gave a Rotary minute about bathroom facilities being in short supply in many parts of the world, even "modernized" areas. He reminded us that Rotary in Chicago placed the first public toilets in 1907, how things have changed.
FELLOWSHIP: Toby Mirto was fellowship leader, gave each table area trivia, but only one had to pay fine, because topic was winter Olympics.
RAFFLE: Karl Rein won the 50/50 but not the big one with 10 of spades.
