Our own Brian Laraway spoke on the Rotary Foundation and how to become a Paul Harris Fellow. The Austintown club is striving for 100% of their members achieving this distinction. Six members achieved this status in 2010, and received their awards and pins from Foundation chairman and past President Brian Laraway. President, Susan Leetch opened the meeting and asked Mark Cole to lead the group in the Invocation, Pledge of Allegiance and singing of "God Bless America".

* Sept. 10 meeting in Alliance regarding District Foundation programs, we need to send a representative.
* Bruce spoke about the District 1A project of sending a team to El Salvador to an orphanage that needs a lot of work. It will be in January, 2011, maximum 20 Rotarians with each club involved allowed to send two, after deadline spaces can be filled by other volunteers. Cost around $1000. per person, all inclusive. Clubsor individuals can also send materials from a list provided by Bruce. A deposit of $250. is due soon, let Susan or Bruce know if you are interested, club might be able to help with costs.
* Mark Cole presented a check for $150. to Susan from O'Donolds Restaurant for car cruise night, use of this new source of funds to bedecided by board. He would like us to do this monthly on different days of week, could be a Pub of the Month venture too.
Vince Colaluca, Supt. of Austintown Schools, announced that our schools have all achieved the EXCELLENT status, thanks in part to our Woodside Reads program, and invited members to a celebration at Fitch this Thursday at 11 a.m. followed by lunch.
FELLOWSHIP: Toby was in charge of fellowship, fined Vince for being pictured in paper, Bruce and Karl for declining the honor to host fellowship, Gary, Melissa, and Deannaspun the wheel for birthdays in summer with variety of results.
PROGRAM: Speaker of the day was our own Brian Laraway, who spoke of the wonderful virtues of the Rotary Foundation. It was founded in 1957 as a way to develop a permanent source of funds for great projects and humanitarian aid in local, national, and international areas. Brian reminded us of our most recent use, in which we sent a check for $250. which was expanded by the Foundation to $25,000. for health supplies in Brazil. Last year the Foundation received $224 million from clubs all over the world, which spent $188 million on humanitarian projects and placed the balance in the permanent fund, spending only the interest back to districts for local projects. Polio Plus is another major recipient of funds, started in 1985 to eliminate polio in the world, it has vaccinated two billion children under5, saving an estimated 5 million from polio. The Gates Foundation has now teamed up with Rotary to make the final push for complete erradication of this disease in the last four countries, with Gates challenging Rotary to raise $200 million in three years to receive $355 million from Gates. As of the second year, $142 million has been raised by Rotary, so that goal will definitely be met.
Another source of funds for the Rotary Foundation is challenging each member to donate annually, with a suggestion of $100. or more a year. Once a member of Rotary contributes $1000., they are designated as a Paul Harris Fellow, honoring the founder of Rotary in 1905.
